Evaluation

As a whole, I wanted my Ident to look like a friendly Ident in which displayed how people who watch shows from certain channels and can be inspired to make their own version of the content presented. This linked to the identity that Challenge has as it presents people being questioned with the promise that they would get a reward and it links to the audience as people who watch at home would participate in trying to answer the questions themselves, which is displayed in this ident as two people watching the program creates their own version of the content of the show, following the same idea of winning money at the end.

For this ident, it was set in the evening. This was due to how people would most likely be at home during the evening after coming home from work. At the beginning of my Ident, there is a mid-shot of two people present at the beginning watching TV in the living room, which is a way to display how people mainly watch game shows at home. Although the main TV is not shown in the ident, I included the use of remote control as a prop. The ident is in three parts, with the first part being about the two representatives watching TV, the second part being them asking each other questions in the form of a game show and the last part showing them ready to watch the next program, so I added certain transitions to let the audience know that the topic is slightly changing. I added a cross dissolve to transition to the question part and I added a normal fade to transition to the last part of the ident. Since this was a minute advert, I wanted to make sure that each part was shown long enough for the audience to know what is happening in the ident. For the first part, I made it 30 seconds to set the stage for the next part. For the second part, I made it last for 20 seconds. As for the last part, I didn't want to make this long since it was them watching TV and this would make the audience bored, so I put in a flash effect with the logo of the channel to let them know that the ident is ending. There is a mid-shot of the two brothers start asking each other questions in the style of ‘who wants to be a millionaire, with the color being changed to a blue effect and the same suspense music used when questions are being asked. This would convey how this show is a well-known show on the channel and that this channel is well known for airing it. Also, this would connote how people would even participate in answering the questions, even from an audience perspective. I added some elements from game shows, such as an X symbol, which would represent that someone got the answer wrong. I added casual background music for the beginning of the ident. The idea of this would give the audience the idea that it is a normal day.

Referring back to the feedback that I had received, I went on to work on what was said about my first draft and made some changes, along with adding some new things, which would make my ident look more better. One of my main issue that I had with my draft was that there was too many jump cuts, which made the editing look rough. I made sure that those were filled up. For example, in one of the jump cuts, when a show was being referred to, I added an image of the show, which was the logo. As for the visual, I originally had the colour be kept the same from how it was when it was filmed. However, I wanted to display the difference between someone watching TV and someone participating in a game show, so for the part where they are asking each other questions, I changed the colour of the visual to blue, which would be a colour to connote intelligence. Also, this would be due to how certain game shows would change the colour of the set to convey that they have started the game and that they have finished it. In my draft, I began with the two representatives watching TV in a mid shot. However, as I wanted to give a bit more context on them watching TV, I filmed some additional shots of the two individuals watching TV but not in the same shot. These shots were added at the beginning of the ident when imported on Final Cut Pro. Since these shots made the duration of the ident extend to more than a minute, I had to cut down some of the shots that I had on the timeline. I decided to cut down the shot where the reward was being discussed. In the draft, The older sibling asked what the reward is and when he heard that it was £200, he found an interest to it. But as I had to cut down a bit of what I had, I cut the part where he asks the question and merged when the younger brother says the reward when he first raises the challenge with him saying the reward. I cut out the part where he says 'Gets a reward' and replaced it with him saying "£200". The idea of this would be from the fact that people go on game shows to win money and the idea of having someone challenge someone with the thought of winning money at the end would interest the other person to accept it. I added background music that would be played during the beginning of my ident. To ensure that it didn't outplay the dialogue, I decreased the volume of the music a tiny bit. As for the ending, it looked a bit empty as it just presented the logo, so I added a voiceover, which was me saying what show was coming up next along with a question asking if someone would be able to walk away with £1m. This would be a way to engage viewers as the show rarely have contestants who win the million-pound cash prize.

In terms of the comparison between my final ident and my original ideas, there are some similarities. My original idea was to have two people going up against each other by asking questions based on the shows. I stuck with this idea as I wanted to make links to the shows on the channels, such as the Chase where contestants go up against the chasers. However, there were some differences. In terms of the planning that I did, my original idea for the ending was that the older brother accused his sibling of cheating and they would face each other in a stare-off as a way to conclude the Ident. This was an idea that was presented in my storyboard. However, seeing as most of the shows present competitions that are more friendly, I decided to change the ending with both representatives laughing about it and getting ready for the next program to come on, which would have been a suitable way to conclude the Ident. I wanted to ask more questions about the shows in the ident, which would have been a great opportunity to make references to other shows. However, seeing as to how long it would take, I decided that both people were going to be asked one question each and it will be based on one of the popular shows. This would be so that whenever these shows were mentioned, the audience would know what channel it is presented on. I had plans to add some archive footage when the shows were mentioned, however, seeing as to how much footage that I had, I saw that there would be no space to place them, so I went along with not putting any archive footage on.
